In Samut Songkhram province, about an hour's drive south-west of Bangkok, lies one of the most unusual markets in the world. The Maeklong Railway Market is built right along a working railway line, with stalls of fruit, vegetables, meat, spices, herbs, flowers and clothes crowding both sides of the narrow track from early morning.
Several times a day, a warning bell rings and the vendors quickly pull back their awnings and move their goods, as the train rolls slowly through the middle of the market, just centimetres from the stalls. Moments later, the awnings open again and business carries on as if nothing had happened. Locals call it Talad Rom Hub, the "umbrella pulldown market".
I photographed this scene on a cloudy day, as the train made its way through the crowded market. The soft, even light under the clouds brings out every detail of the stalls, the produce and the people, capturing the rhythm of a place where daily life and the railway share the same narrow space.
