On Iceland's rugged south coast, just outside the village of Vík, stands Dyrhólaey, known to early sailors as Cape Portland. Once considered the southernmost point of mainland Iceland, this dramatic headland is famous for its enormous black arch, formed from ancient volcanic lava and standing in the pounding waves of the North Atlantic.

In summer, the cliffs come alive with seabirds, and Atlantic puffins nest along the headland, making it one of the best places in Iceland to see them up close.

I photographed Dyrhólaey just before sunset, as beautiful golden rays broke through the sky and lit up the coast. The warm light against the dark volcanic rock and the cold Atlantic creates a striking contrast of fire and ice, the very essence of Iceland.
